  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt (namak)
  • Oil (tel) for greasing the idli moulds

Equipment

  • Idli steamer or pressure cooker with idli moulds
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spatula
  • Knife
  • Chopping board

Method

1. First, take the slices of bread and cut them into small pieces. 2. In a mixing bowl, add the bread pieces and semolina. Mix well. 3. Add curd and mix again. 4. Add grated carrot, chopped capsicum, chopped onion, chopped coriander leaves, baking soda, and salt. Mix well. 5. In a small pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds and urad dal. Let them splutter. 6. Add the tempering to the bread mixture and mix well. 7. Add water as required to make a thick batter. 8. Grease the idli moulds with oil. 9. Pour the batter into the moulds. 10. Steam the idlis for 10-15 minutes. 11. Once done, remove the moulds from the steamer and let them cool for a few minutes. 12. Using a knife, gently remove the idlis from the moulds. 13. Serve hot with chutney and sambar.

  • You can also add other vegetables of your choice.
  • You can also add grated cheese to the batter for a cheesy flavour.
  • If the batter is too thick, add more water to get the right consistency.
